In Memoriam: Engelken, Longtime APTA Employee

Albert Engelken, 79, of Alexandria, VA, a 28-year employee of APTA and its predecessor organization, the American Transit Association, and a member of the APTA Hall of Fame, died May 9.

Engelken, who retired in 1997 and was admitted to the APTA Hall of Fame two years later, was a longtime editor of Passenger Transport, directed the industry’s communications strategy in the formative years of the federal public transit program and produced the APTA awards ceremony.

During his tenure, Engelken was responsible for the introduction of APTA programs including the Bus Operators’ Roadeo, which expanded into the International Bus Roadeo and International Rail Rodeo, and the AdWheel Awards recognizing the marketing and communications efforts of association members.
