APTA Business Members Promote Public Transportation on Capitol Hill

More than twenty APTA business members participated in a Capitol Hill fly-in to advocate for continued federal investment in public transportation, both in the annual appropriations process and through the much-discussed proposals for a new infrastructure initiative, May 17 during National Infrastructure Week.

Hosted by APTA’s Business Member Board of Governors (BMBG), the fly-in coincided with the House THUD Appropriations Subcommittee’s initial markup of the FY 2019 bill.

The day began with opening remarks and a welcome from U.S. House of Representatives Highways and Transit Subcommittee Chairman Rep. Sam Graves (R-MO) who updated the group on the committee’s work. “When you come to DC and meet with members of Congress, it has an impact,” he said.

In introducing Rep. Graves, APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas stated, “What’s most significant is your own experiences; where you come from, where you’re now located, how many people you employ, your impact in terms of jobs. That is the powerful message here.”

Business Member Legislative Committee Chair and BMBG member Ray Melleady offered his thoughts on the importance of the fly-in. “This event helps us bring awareness, educate our legislators and advocate to help address the transportation infrastructure problem we have in this country.”

Business members took part in almost 60 meetings throughout the day. This was the third fly-in hosted by the BMBG in the past several years.
