Ferries Receive FTA Funds to Enhance Safety, Reliability

Thirteen APTA member agencies were among the 20 recipients of FTA funds from the Passenger Ferry Grant Program, totaling $58.2 million, to improve the safety and reliability of U.S. passenger ferries and enhance mobility for ferry users.

The ferry grant program is funded through Fiscal Year 2020 under a law amended by the FAST Act.

The member agencies and projects are as follows:

* New York City DOT, $6.3 million for two Staten Island Ferry projects: to modify raised platforms and walkways and to ensure compliance with federal, state and local environmental regulations;

* Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority, Boston, $6 million to replace the existing dock at the Hingham Ferry Terminal with a new, fully accessible ferry dock;

* New Jersey Transit Corporation, $6 million to initiate new passenger ferry service between Carteret, NJ, and New York City, including purchase of a new ferry vessel;

* Washington State DOT, $6 million for two projects: to construct a new bicycle facility at a multimodal facility in Seattle and to modernize terminal and vessel communication infrastructure that has reached the end of its useful life;

* San Francisco Bay Area Water Emergency Transportation Authority, $5 million to refurbish and modernize a ferry vessel;

* Jacksonville (FL) Transportation Authority, $3.36 million for public safety and state of good repair improvements to the St. Johns River Ferry;

* Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, $2.48 million to modernize the power and propulsion engine systems on four vessels;

* Kitsap County Public Transportation Benefit Area Authority, Bremerton, WA, $2.45 million to complete modifications to two existing ferry terminals to facilitate their use and support startup passenger-only service;

* Regional Transit Authority, New Orleans, $2.4 million to modernize the New Orleans Algiers Ferry Terminal by upgrading its barge;

* Chatham Area Transit Authority, Savannah, GA, $2.1 million for construction of a new ferry maintenance facility, which will allow the agency to construct a new ferry dock;

* Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District, Moline, IL, $2 million to construct a terminal that will increase safety and security, enhance accessibility, expand dock space and provide new passenger amenities, and to rehabilitate the agency’s ferries;

* Central Oklahoma Transportation and Parking Authority, Oklahoma City, $1.2 million to add a new ferry landing, improve passenger amenities at another and enhance security at the main terminal; and

* King County DOT, Seattle, $1.2 million to conduct preliminary engineering and environmental analysis for a permanent ferry terminal location in West Seattle that would support passenger-only ferry service to downtown Seattle.
