TAMC Breaks Ground for Salinas Rail Extension

The Transportation Agency for Monterey County (TAMC), CA, broke ground earlier this month at the site of the existing Salinas Train Station for a project to expand passenger rail service to the county and extend multimodal connections.

The Monterey County Rail Extension-Kick Start Project will extend passenger rail service from Santa Clara County to Salinas, improving passenger rail access among Salinas, San Jose and San Francisco. The first phase will provide safe, signalized access to the current station, which is served by Amtrak Coast Starlight, Amtrak Thruway Bus (a system of Amtrak-owned intercity coaches, locally contracted transit buses, through-ticketed local bus routes and taxi services to connect Amtrak stations to areas not served by its railroads) and Greyhound Bus.

Eventually, Caltrain will join Amtrak in providing service to the station. Monterey-Salinas Transit is a key partner in this project, planning seamless connections to the existing and future services at the station once a nearby street is extended.

This rail extension project represents an $81 million investment in the infrastructure of Monterey County, according to TAMC, through a collaboration of state and regional transportation agencies and local jurisdictions.
