Survey: Students Would Rather Not Drive

In a recent survey of almost 600 college and university students in Southern California, 90 percent said they would consider using public transit instead of driving if it were reliable, affordable, convenient and safe.

Results of the online survey were released at a forum sponsored by Metrolink commuter rail, student leaders at California State University Los Angeles (Cal State LA) and the university’s Pat Brown Institute for Public Affairs. Forum participants included college and university student leaders from throughout the region, elected officials and public transit executives. They focused on the unique mobility needs of millennials and younger people, the next generation of commuters.

While 69 percent of respondents said their personal vehicle best meets their needs, followed by 44 percent for transportation network companies and about 33 percent for public transit and carpooling, 68 percent said they prefer not driving alone. Most respondents would be considered working class, with two-thirds reporting annual incomes below $30,000.

When asked what features are important for them for transportation, 76 percent cited environmentally responsible modes and 86 percent said they want transportation to be stress free—both of which are true with public transit.

Survey participants responded to an array of questions to gauge how they get to school, work and other destinations and what features would make public transit a better option for them.

Their priorities include getting them exactly where they need to go quickly, reliability, affordability and safety.
