TTC to Open First Subway Extension Since 2002

As Passenger Transport went to press, the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) was preparing for the opening of the 5.3-mile Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, the first new subway extension in the system since 2002 and the first to extend beyond city limits.

The extension includes six new stations, two of which are located on the York University campus north of Toronto. Funding for the $3.18 billion (Cdn.) project includes $697 million from the Canadian government, $974 million from the province of Ontario, $904 million from the city of Toronto and $604 million from the Regional Municipality of York.

“The greater Toronto area is growing at an incredible rate,” said Brad Ross, TTC executive director, corporate communications, noting that the city’s population of about 2.8 million is part of six million region-wide.

“Rapid transit expansion is vital to our local economy and getting people moving,” Ross continued. “Expanding the subway north to suburban areas will significantly help reduce congestion and greenhouse gas emissions by allowing who might otherwise have to drive to take public transit.”

Ross said TTC expects the line extension to provide about 30 million new rides annually. Several of the stations will have multimodal capabilities to connect with bus lines.
