Mid-Year Safety Seminar Focuses on Regulations, Tech Issues

More than 70 people attended the recent APTA Mid-Year Safety Seminar in Houston.

National Transportation Safety Board member Christopher Hart gave the keynote address and FTA and FRA officials shared information including regulatory, technical and safety management systems updates.

Houston’s Metropolitan Transit Authority of Harris County (METRO) hosted the event and Chief Executive Officer & President Thomas Lambert welcomed participants. Committee Chairs Lisa Staes (Bus Safety), Walter Heinrich (Rail Safety), Hilary Konczal (Commuter Rail Safety and Security) and Gerry Ruggiero (Safety Coordinating) provided updates.

Discussion topics included the newly improved 2018 Safety and Security Awards program, technology and safety, training, fatigue management and safety culture lessons learned from the APTA Study Mission to Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo. Also during the seminar, APTA helped raise almost $500 for Houston METRO employees who suffered losses due to Hurricane Harvey.
