What is your committee’s role for APTA and the industry as a whole?

The APTA Clean Propulsion & Support Technology Committee is charged with keeping a finger on the pulse of innovation on vehicle propulsion and mobility. We research, analyze and disseminate information about the leading edge of propulsion technology, such as zero-emission buses. Information on state-of-the-art designs, their deployment and regulatory controls are captured, discussed and distributed to APTA members. We bring together experts from industry, transit and standards agencies to ensure such technology is safe, reliable and cost-effective.

What are the committee’s top priorities for the year?

For several years, the committee has been developing and distributing a Clean Propulsion Resource Guide that serves as a comprehensive manual for those wishing to learn more about the state of the art in clean propulsion. The guide provides links to information on new technology, who offers it, how to get training and public transit agencies already using it who can provide valuable insights on their experiences.

We are also holding quarterly webinars on topics such as electric buses, alternative fuels, workforce development and other propulsion-related industry news. Lastly, we will be providing regular updates on fast-changing government and regulatory legislation impacting our members.

How does the committee engage members in these priorities?

Our regular meetings, webinars and email communications provide opportunities for member engagement. We also join the Bus Technical Maintenance Committee to host a Maintenance Managers Workshop, typically held on the Monday of each year’s APTA Bus & Paratransit Conference. At this year’s event in Tampa, we’ve scheduled a great lineup of speakers as well as roundtable discussions with subject matter experts.

APTA’s committees play an important role in fulfilling the association’s commitment to developing industry leaders, especially young professionals. Please share how your committee encourages young professionals to participate in its work.

The concept of clean propulsion involves the understanding and deployment of new and advanced technology. What better way to engage young professionals! By presenting and discussing topics on forward-looking ideas, we are helping to show that a path in public transit is a path toward a bright future for new talent in our industry.

Please share how an individual’s service on this committee can add value to his or her career.

Joining the committee is to be part of driving the public transit industry toward cleaner, more efficient and cost-effective operations. Committee members have the chance to learn and bring back knowledge to their respective organizations and, in turn, ensure they are taking advantage of industry best practices and are ready for the future. Of course, the chance to network and share ideas is great, too.

What is the committee doing to advance the goals in APTA’s strategic plan?

Our committee activities align closely with several of APTA’s strategic goals:

* Technology Innovation—Our primary focus is on technology and the role it plays in public transit. Our activities help APTA and our members stay current and relevant. We also support development of new standards to best incorporate new technology.

* Safety—With new technology comes the need for evaluation of how to safely implement such ideas industry-wide. Our discussions and webinars include this topic.

* Workforce Development—Through awareness of and the review of industry best practices for training and development, the committee helps make our workforce ready and capable of operating the next generation of buses.
