FTA Small Starts Grants for IndyGo, Sound Transit

FTA announced May 15 that IndyGo in Indianapolis and Sound Transit in Seattle will each receive $75 million Small Starts grants through the Capital Investment Grant program, for a new BRT line and a light rail line extension respectively.

IndyGo’s 13.1-mile Red Line Rapid Transit project, including 7.7 miles of dedicated and semi-exclusive bus lanes and traffic signal priority, will connect the Indianapolis central business district with a neighboring village to the north and the University of Indianapolis to the south. It will serve universities, hospitals, government offices, community services and a public transit center. The project also includes the purchase of 13 buses.

“It is vital that IndyGo continue to be smart stewards of the public’s investment in bettering transit,” said IndyGo Board Chair Danny Crenshaw. Ground breaking is anticipated within the next two months.

Sound Transit’s Tacoma Link Extension project will add 2.4 miles of track, doubling the length of the existing system, along with six new stations and five new light rail vehicles. Construction is scheduled to begin this fall on the extension, which will connect previously unserved neighborhoods to major employment centers including downtown Tacoma.

Tacoma Mayor Victoria Woodards, also a Sound Transit board member, said, “The expanded Tacoma Link system will improve transportation around the city and connect riders with regional light rail, Sounder [commuter rail] trains and bus service at the Tacoma Dome.”
