JTA Launches Third BRT Line; FTA's Williams at Ceremonies

The Jacksonville (FL) Transportation Authority (JTA) introduced service on its third and longest First Coast Flyer BRT line, the Red Line, at a recent event addressed by FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams.

“Today, the First Coast Flyer Green and Blue lines provide a total of 3,400 trips per day and transit riders old and new appreciate its faster, more frequent and more reliable service,” Williams said. “That’s a winning formula, one that will be replicated as the First Coast Flyer Red Line heads east to the beaches, giving riders greater mobility to reach better jobs and opportunities along the way so they can benefit from a growing economy.”

JTA Chief Executive Officer and APTA Immediate Past Chair Nathaniel P. Ford Sr. said, “Already the largest BRT network in the Southeast, the new 18.5-mile Red Line nearly doubles the footprint of the existing First Coast Flyer Blue and Green lines and connects more people to jobs, education, healthcare and entertainment. The Flyer serves as an economic driver for the region. In the last year, there has been a half-billion dollars in economic activity within a half-mile of high-frequency transit corridors.”

FTA provided $16.9 million, 50 percent of the $33.9 million East Corridor (Red Line) project, through its Capital Investment Grants program. The remaining costs are being covered by Florida DOT and JTA.

The new line, the fourth of five First Coast Flyer routes, includes 21 branded stations and transit signal priority at 32 intersections that allow buses to move through intersections without stopping by extending green lights. The route stops at major destinations including Florida State College-Jacksonville South Campus, the University of North Florida and Jacksonville Beach, operating with CNG buses equipped with complimentary Wi-Fi, mobile ticketing, onboard monitors with real-time bus route/stop, weather and other information.
