OC Streetcar Construction Gets Rolling in Santa Ana, CA

Immediately following the recent signing of a $149 million federal Full Funding Grant Agreement (FFGA) for the first modern electric streetcar in Orange County, CA, FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams and Orange County Transportation Authority (OCTA) Chief Executive Officer Darrell E. Johnson participated in ground-breaking ceremonies for the line in Santa Ana, CA.

The project will cost approximately $408 million, more than half of which will be covered by the FFGA along with additional federal funding. State cap-and-trade funds through the Transit and Intercity Rail Capital Program and Orange County Measure M sales tax revenues will cover the remaining costs.

The OC Streetcar will operate six Siemens S70 modern streetcars on a 4.1-mile route between Santa Ana and Garden Grove, serving major employment areas including county and local government offices and courthouses with 10 stations.

OCTA Chairwoman and county Supervisor Lisa Bartlett said at the event, “This is a truly exciting day as we begin construction on a new travel option in Orange County’s urban core.”

Johnson said, “The OC Streetcar project is now a reality because of significant collaboration backed by sound transportation planning.”

Williams noted that the streetcar will enhance connections to Metrolink commuter rail, Amtrak, Greyhound and local bus service.

Among the dignitaries breaking ground for OCTA’s OC Streetcar were Chief Executive Officer Darrell E. Johnson, fourth from left; California Transportation Agency Secretary Brian Annis, fifth from left; FTA Acting Administrator K. Jane Williams, sixth from left; and OCTA Chairwoman Lisa Bartlett, fourth from right.
