New CNG Buses, Fueling Station in Flint, MI

The Mass Transportation Authority (MTA) in Flint, MI, recently took delivery of 13 new CNG-fueled 40-foot buses from Gillig and opened a CNG fueling station that is also available for public use.

The 13 vehicles, along with another 22 buses arriving over the next 10 months, will replace 24-year-old diesel coaches that have exceeded their useful life, normally 12 years. The new buses will operate on fixed routes throughout the greater Flint area.

The newly built public-private fueling station, owned and operated by Consumers Energy, is located at the MTA’s Grand Blanc Service Center. It has three fueling dispensers—two dedicated to MTA vehicles and private fleets and the third for public use. Plans also call for the future installation of four electric vehicle charging stations, available for use by the public, at the site.

Currently 80 percent of the MTA fleet operates on alternative fuels and the agency anticipates replacing all its diesel-fueled vehicles by 2020. Over the past several years, the MTA has reduced its use of fossil fuel diesel from 1.4 million gallons annually to an expected low of 300,000 gallons.

“We are extremely proud of our progress to attain a 100 percent alternative fuel fleet while working to reduce the carbon footprint and creating a clean operating environment,” said MTA General Manager/Chief Executive Officer Ed Benning.
MTA and Consumers Energy recently opened an alternative fueling station that serves both the agency’s vehicles and the public.
