Relationship Between Public Transit and Cities Praised at APTA Leadership Summit

At a featured luncheon, The Role of Public Transit in Reinventing Cities, during APTA’s Industry Leadership Summit in Washington, DC, Clarence E. Anthony, CEO/executive director of the National League of Cities (NLC), acknowledged the leadership role of public transit in transforming cities by bringing together people, businesses, services and policies.

With mobility central to the growth of communities, he noted, “Public transit determines the success of people’s lives. You make a difference; you tie communities together.”

Anthony urged public transit leaders to not so much think outside the box but to understand that there no longer is a box. “My challenge to you,” he said, “is to get out of your lane, go to a meeting you wouldn’t normally attend and make people aware of all the different ways transit is involved with communities. A seat at the table? Disruption has taken away the table!”

He described the close working relationship between NLC and APTA, a relationship that is set to grow as city leaders increasingly strategize how to integrate autonomous vehicles into their transportation plans. “NLC, APTA and APTA members have a real opportunity to work together and build a stronger relationship focused on outcomes,” he said.

APTA President and CEO Paul P. Skoutelas, presiding at the luncheon, also praised the relationship between the two organizations: “Cities and local municipalities are on the front lines of an emerging, integrated, flexible mobility, and public transportation will be at the center of it all. NLC and APTA share many of the same interests, from economic development and safety to a clean environment and a better quality of life. Our two organizations collaborate and work side-by-side because mobility is at the heart of these issues,” he said.

The luncheon was sponsored by Ecolane.
