Three Agencies Recognized for Sustainability Efforts

APTA recently recognized three public transportation systems for their sustainability achievements: the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA), Caltrain commuter rail and the San Mateo County Transit District (SamTrans), each of which achieved Silver Level recognition.

APTA’s Sustainability Commitment is a voluntary program for public transit agencies and businesses to commit to environmental, social and economic sustainability actions and give APTA members credit for the efforts they are already making in sustainability. The program, begun in 2009, currently has 143 signatories.

Silver Level – MARTA
MARTA reduced water usage by 27 percent when it made three key changes: implementing stormwater management plans at each of its facilities, improving train-wash requirements and water treatment plant operations, and installing bus-wash water reclamation systems. MARTA has also developed community programs at Five Points in Atlanta, including public gardens for local high school students to tend as part of their curriculum and soccer fields for community members. Additionally, MARTA promotes multimodal transit around Atlanta beyond its own services by partnering with the city in a bikeshare program.

Silver Level – Caltrain
Caltrain in San Carlos, CA, expanded its use of renewable electricity in 2017 by partnering with three Community Choice Energy Programs and two municipal utilities, which will supply 100 percent renewable power from sources including solar, wind and small hydroelectric. Through this effort, Caltrain will reduce its carbon footprint from electricity use by approximately 20 percent. The agency was also able to realize a 48 percent reduction in water usage per passenger miles traveled by introducing train-wash systems that recycle 80 percent of water used, using water-conserving faucet aerators in administrative offices, and installing “smart” irrigation controllers for landscaping, along with other measures.

Silver Level – SamTrans

SamTrans, also in San Carlos, has worked to improve its overall sustainability through a variety of initiatives over the past seven years. The agency reduced its criteria air pollutant emissions by 31 percent per passenger miles traveled by adding 25 diesel-electric hybrid buses to its fleet in 2013 and 2014; these buses save fuel and produce fewer nitrogen oxide emissions, inhalable particulates and greenhouse gas emissions. In 2018, SamTrans retrofitted 131 diesel buses with SensoTop software that increases mileage per gallon and reduces fuel consumption through optimal gear shifting. SamTrans conservatively estimates the software will save approximately 18,750 gallons of diesel annually.
