'STRETCH' Buses Support Quad Cities Commuters

To ease traffic congestion during a period of bridge construction in the Quad Cities region between Illinois and Iowa, the Rock Island County Metropolitan Mass Transit District (MetroLink), Moline, IL, introduced two new free “STRETCH” commuter bus routes on Dec. 3.

The two new weekday routes will operate for 18 months, one serving downtown Moline and the other connecting downtown Davenport, IA, with downtown Rock Island, IL, while construction continues on the I-74 Bridge across the Mississippi River. MetroLink partnered with Iowa DOT and the bus system in Davenport to provide the free service.

The service will operate with four 35-foot Gillig buses owned by the Davenport system and given a complete overhaul by Midwest Bus Corporation. The process included rebuilding or replacing almost every mechanical aspect of each bus, with the exception of engines or transmissions, along with a total interior and exterior renovation.

“This partnership between Davenport Citibus and Metro is just one way we are working on providing seamless connections throughout our community,” said Jennifer Hirsch, manager of administration for MetroLink. “The improvements to the I-74 corridor provided an opportunity for transit to help reduce traffic congestion due to busy construction activities.”
