MassDOT Installs New Bridge Superstructure

Massachusetts DOT recently installed new superstructure to the East Street Bridge Replacement in Westwood that carries the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority’s Franklin Commuter Rail Line, replacing a bridge originally constructed in 1911. The bridge construction project, under a contract for almost $12 million, included the installation of deep foundations (precast concrete drilled shafts) behind the existing abutments, utility relocation, track reconstruction, new precast concrete abutment caps (shown), precast concrete approach slabs and two steel superstructures installed using accelerated bridge construction techniques. The bridge superstructure was transported to the site from the MassDOT Yard at Grafton Avenue, where it was built.
