TriMet Partners with Google on Virtual Fares

Portland’s Tri-County Metropolitan Transportation District of Oregon (TriMet) is teaming up with Google to make Hop Fastpass™, the regional farecard that also includes C-TRAN in Vancouver, WA, and the Portland Streetcar, the first virtual transit card available in Android Pay.

Beta testing for this integration will start in December with testers representing the three participating systems. Loading a virtual Hop card into Android Pay will allow users to tap their phones to pay for their fares and receive all the benefits of a physical Hop card.

Currently, TriMet riders can tap their smartphones with Android Pay at a Hop reader and pay for a ride using a debit or credit card, but that is limited to the purchase of an adult fare; the expanded service will offer a variety of fares and other benefits including auto-reload, online reload and the ability to earn day or month passes with no upfront cost.

Other technology partners in the project are INIT, which provided back-end processing software; CH2M, with technical and project management; and moovel N.A. LLC, whose mobile apps include the Hop Fastpass and TriMet Tickets.
